    Project Analysis

We have reached a point in time where we can say the Ghost project is “done” where we have film to call our own, with imperfections and all. During this project I was technically the Art director for the film, being in charge of the overall style and look of the project. I say technically since I don't think I adequately fulfilled this role for the project. Sure I worked on creating the style chart for the project which went through multiple iterations throughout the duratio

    Re-renders finishline

Reaching the final stages of the Ghost project where we are up sending the files to be graded and put together. I have had to re-render some shots as the effects of tiredness are starting to seep into the project. Some of my scenes I rendered the wrong camera, or failed to render some passes for some shots. Some of the previous renders are not working in the compositing stage. So some tweaks such as having objects masking the ghosts to be re-rendered. A bunch of my Maya scene

    Background Progress

Here is some of the first coloring's of the backgrounds for the group animation project. From these backgrounds, turns out it is a different style to those of the interior, Who would have thought two people doing backgrounds there would be inconsistency. So the decision for this was to replace the organic drawn lines with straighter cleaner cut lines. that is a bit boring, but a necessary change to make with the given time we have left and to make the design match the rest of

    Backgrounds Now 2D

The project has had a direction change and we are now going to do 2D drawn backgrounds. I have volunteered to help out with the back grounds and work on all of the exterior shots for the film Here are some of the initial background sketches have come up with based on the cameras in maya With working in the maya scenes for animation I am still facing trouble of crashing scnes, no where near as much as before but still a slow fustrating distracting amount of crashing. #chunnyb

    CRASH, redo CRASH, repeat..

Have been pushing through with animation for the group project. The smallest shots that I have have been giving me the most grief. Constant crashing even with deleting history and reducing the scene down to bare bones still crashing. The scenes have been crashing for a bunch of different reasons that I can diagnosis History not being deleted on some of the meshes Known nodes in scene as a result of rendered not installed on all machines from all the group members Large namesp

    Rework Redraw Redo Try Again

The last fortnight has been a lot of reworking and retrying with the style guide and modifying concepts of Tommy. For the group ghost project. Here is the a evolution of the the style chart progress from the first image bashing to the later one of mixing in renders and drawing. Each iteration of the style frame has some design elements that need to be change for different reasons. most of the time due to inconsistent or conflicting design aspects within the scene. Success

Image from https://www.flickr.com/photos/photolaphoto/12127113904/ "Success is something that you do, not something that happens to you." I have mixed feelings and conceptions of success, Thinking to the future trying to sort out goals and reflecting on myself is something that I get anxious about and takes a lot of effort for me. One hand success is a state of being, a feeling of satisfaction, happiness and sense of achievement in overcoming some form of challenge. On the ot

    FINALLY Houdini Update

Today is a big day, Was able to finally import a workable animated FBX file into houdini. Each time I have tried it brought in all of the history and joints into houdini creating a complex node system where I had no idea how to add the modifiers that i want to play with. Below is a zoomed out view of all the nodes that had to deal with when importing a animation. I found a forum post detail how to successful get a animated mesh out of maya without all the history. It involves

    ghostly concepts

Last fortnight have been working away creating and reworking things for Ghost project and trying to sort things for research report for a different subject. With this it slipped my mind to record the progress. Alright so the start of radio silence from me the project shifted into high gear. With a calculation of time we have left and how much time we have put into the project it was calculated that we are/were falling behind. The start of the project had steam but we kind of

    Houdini Crowds

I started building a sculpt in Houdini trying to mix and experiment with the Copy node. Starting with a sphere node then adding copy and playing around with mixing different nodes started creating a abstract sculpture that I was going to animate in some form. Had a loose plan to animate the spheres growing and morphing creating a ripple effect. i go as far as creating the start sculpture before exploring with some preset nodes in houdini. I found a node called a crowd, so i

    Tracking Ghosts

This week I created a floor plan for the Ghost house. I started by looking at the reffnce concept then tried to find floor plans for houses of similar styles. then building a plan based of this similar house. For the floor plan I decided to build the full house interior as a full plan more as a reffence for ourselves. Even knowing that the full house may not be used it can be nice to know how the house layout is help stage shots or as a backup in case we do decide to have mor

    Pre-Alpha Nuking

Some notes on Pre-multiplied Alpha and Nuke so far. With digital images broken into individual components, RGBA RGB- specifies how much color contributes to scene Alpha at base generally has no value, but can often be used to represent transparency Alpha can be calculated in two ways Conventional- Where RGB Specifies the color and A specifies how solid the color is. Premultplied calculates the Rgb as how much color the object is adding to the scene. where the A determines ho

    Burning Laptop Experiments

Today I have been playing around in Houdini trying to put stuff together that I have learnt and mixing it with some experimentation.' The first part of the day I watched some basics of Houdini tutorials to try and learn how the rendering works. I learnt that Houdini has a render region that is similar to the Arnold render view in Maya where it updates with real time changes. One of the experiments I tried to play with was simply trying to mix two color nodes or to create a ra

    Houdini so Far

So for independent research I have been looking at tutorials for Houdini. The first time opening Houdini I noticed that Houdini has a menu tab for different categories similar to maya. In the first opening of the program I created a sphere then I explored some of the menu sets through these sets I found a Firework setting, Clicking on this firework setting created a firework particle system that became attached to the the sphere. From here I explored the menus and ended up tu

    Quad Animation

Have started on my next project of animating a quadruped creature focusing on body mechanics. I have sourced some slow motion footage of a dog running. The footage has minimal camera movements and is aimed from the side so it allows me to look at the motion of the run in detail. Currently i am thinking of trying to animate the creature chasing a ball and coming to a sliding stop. this could be a interesting range of dynamic movement to try to experiment with. For this project

    Flour Feedback

So after a little bit of time of not looking at the flour sack animation thinking it was done and dusted for the time being. I sent the animation to one of my previous teachers who likes to be informed and updated on current work. This teacher pointed out some small flaws and feedback for the animation. So i had another look at the animation and I can see pretty clearly now that it has been pointed out. The center of mass of the character suffers from a period of inactivity.

    Dancing Sack Reflection

Working with the flour sack has been fun. But inefficient in the way I go about working with the file. Here is a review of the process and some things I learnt or encounter along the along the way. Setting up a image sequence in for a cameras image plane is pretty straight forward. At first had a slight hiccup with the images I was using started at image 400 since I deleted the earlier images since nothing was happening in the reference footage. So had to figure out how to ge

    Riggity Plans

Have narrowed down the possible rigs to use for animation practice for my personal projects. As mentioned earlier I found a nice rigger from Vietnam who creates a variety of rigs from bipedal game characters to a assorted mix of different quad and swimming type creatures. I will be breaking up the animation projects into three different mini projects to get some quick practice at different moments. The first project will be using a 3D version of the classic Disney flour Sack.

    Rigs

Over the last week have been looking at alot of different rigs from different sournces such as highend3d 11 second club, anmation buffet. The many free rigs range from start from bad to overused with some good ones every so often. I found a site called MRigs or Creature Ris. which has some pretty sweet looking creature body shapes but unfortuanly these rigs are not free. But would have been nice to work with these rigs. Going through many rigs I think I am starting to get a
